Motzi

The braids of the challah have many symbols. Our challah has three braids that represent truth, peace and justice. The word Challah is derived from the Hebrew word for portion in the Biblical commandment “Of the first of your dough you shall give unto the Lord a portion or a gift throughout your generations.” Our interpretation places the Challah on the Sabbath tablecloth encircled by the traditional motzi blessing. The challah is bordered with wheat stalks to symbolize that wheat is the staff of life and in truth we are celebrating a life affirmation and the blessing of peace.

Peace

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

May the Lord shine his face upon you and be gracious to you.

May the Lord lift his countenance upon you and grant you peace.

In Hebrew, this blessing is composed of three sentences. The first sentence at three words long, is a blessing for material success. The second sentence is five words long, it is a blessing for spiritual development. The third sentence which is seven words long, is a blessing for Shalom. Since Peace is the most difficult to realize it requires the most words. Any blessing for material, intellectual, or spiritual success is without merit unless it brings with it some measure of Peace

Our version of “The Priestly Blessing”, has the Hebrew written upon a Jerusalem stone surface. The blessing is surrounded by the universal symbol of peace, olive branches. We chose “The Priestly Blessing” for this artwork because we wanted to extend our wishes for peace beyond a mere “Shalom”.

Original  pastel/mixed media,"Peace", is available unframed at $750.00 or framed at $950.00
